Sociology (AS)

Program Description

Sociology is a good fit for students who are curious about culture, social behavior, societal structures, and the factors that influence human interactions. Students can expect to study topics such as cultural diversity, social theory, group dynamics, deviance, socialization, research methods, power, the economy, family, and religion.

Program Outcomes

Students who complete an associate degree in Sociology should expect the following outcomes from the program: 

  • Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the major sociological theories and perspectives and their application to observable social phenomena.
  • Students will gain an understanding and knowledge of the methods used by sociologists and other social and behavioral scientists to discover, describe, explain, and/or predict human behavior and social systems.
  • Students will be able to understand, apply. and articulate how their own personal life experiences relate and connect to the broader social processes and structures of culture and society (sociology identifies this as the "sociological imagination").
  • Students will gain an understanding and application for cultural diversity, including the ability to analyze how cultural differences impact social structures and individual experiences.
  • Students will develop a global perspective on social issues, understanding how globalization affects local and international communities and institutions.
