Geology (AS)

Program Description

Geology is the perfect field for people who love the natural world. If you like math and science and you love to spend time outdoors, a degree in geology is a great option for you. Geologists are in high demand to work in energy, mineral, water, and environmental fields.

Program Outcomes

A student who completes an associate degree in Geology will be able to do the following.

  • Identify common rocks, minerals, fossils, and interpret the geologic and biologic processes responsible for their development.
  • Read and interpret aerial/satellite imagery, topographic maps, and geologic maps (including constructing geologic cross sections based on map data, identifying landforms and structures and processes responsible for their development).
  • Recognize the sequence of major events in Earth's history and how they relate to each other. Describe and interpret the Earth's history, including its sedimentological, paleoclimatic, tectonic, and biological history.
  • Demonstrate ability to apply geologic knowledge and skills in Outcomes 1-3 to make and interpret observations in field settings.
  • Effectively communicate geologic concepts in written, oral, and visual formats.
  • Successfully transfer into a four year geoscience program.
