Family and Human Development (AS)

Program Description

As a part of the Human Development Program, students learn skills for helping and understanding individuals, families, or groups. This is achieved through studying biological and theoretical approaches across the lifespan, as well as experiencing observational and hands-on learning with children in a laboratory setting. In addition to examining specific problems and phenomena, students learn how human service agencies and professionals deal with human development-related issues.

Program Outcomes

A student who completes an associate degree in Family and Human Development will be able to do the following.

  • Students will understand the major theories of family and/or human development.
  • Students will understand the normal patterns of physical, emotional, social, moral, and cognitive development across the lifespan.
  • Students understand developmentally appropriate practice and strategies for positive guidance and discipline as it relates to parenting and/or education.
  • Students can observe, record, and interpret children's behavior in the context of development theories.
  • Students will understand aspects of the family including but not limited to consumerism, finance, food and nutrition, and relationships.
