Program Description
The Family and Consumer Sciences Education (FCSE) program prepares students to become Family and Consumer Science (FCS) educators in both school-based and community-based settings. FCSE graduates are qualified to teach many subjects, including nutrition and foods, child and human development, apparel and textile construction, interior design, financial literacy, and more. Students in the community-based emphasis program are prepared to become non-formal FCS educators in various settings such as extension, the 4-H program, FCS-related industries, and nonprofit organizations.
Program Outcomes
Students who complete an associate degree in Family and Consumer Science Education will be able to do the following.
- Students will plan and deliver engaging and standards-based instruction using a variety of teaching methods, technologies, and/or assessments suited for diverse learners.
- Students will demonstrate proper food preparation techniques and evaluate food products made in the lab.
- Students will understand the fundamental principles of food safety, food preparation, food preservation, and cooking and food science terms.
- Students will understand all aspects of the family including but not limited to consumerism, finance, food and nutrition, and relationships.
- Students will understand sewing machines, sergers and other equipment to demonstrate basic sewing skills and techniques.
