This introductory design course provides students with a foundation in the principles and classical language of architecture, emphasizing enduring precedents. Students explore order, proportion, archetypal geometry, and patterns derived from nature and the cosmos through lectures, drawing exercises, workshops, critiques, and design reviews.

Introduces hand-drawn architectural rendering with such media as pencil and watercolor. Students learn to create accurate perspectives, elevations, plans, and sections, and translate measured drawings into three-dimensional representations. The course emphasizes architectural rendering as a professional language for communicating ideas and information to clients, colleagues, and other professionals.

This course introduces the foundational principles of architectural design through hands-on projects in a studio environment. Students learn to observe, analyze, and organize space using architectural ideas such as proportion, hierarchy, rhythm, and scale. Emphasis is placed on process, iteration, and the relationship between form, structure, and human experience. Students communicate design intent through architectural drawings, models, and visual presentations, establishing a foundation for continued architectural study.

This course explores architectural design through the development of complete building solutions that respond to site, context, and environmental systems. Students analyze complex site elements such as topography, water features, vegetation, habitats, climate, urban fabric, and historical context to guide design decisions. Using this analysis, they develop complete residential designs, evaluate materials, and make informed design choices.
